You Make It (YMI) is looking for an exceptional Finance Manager to oversee our finance function and ensure strong financial management, reporting and controls across the organisation.

Working closely with our Founder CEO, Treasurer and staff, you’ll play a critical role in helping YMI remain financially healthy, accountable and funder-ready, enabling our work to create lasting impact.

This is a freelance, ongoing role, designed to sit alongside your other clients or commitments.

  • Contract: Ongoing freelance
  • Rate: £250–£350 per day (inclusive of VAT and expenses), dependent on experience and VAT status
  • Start Date: ASAP
  • Reporting to: Founder CEO
  • Location: Home-based with periodic London meetings
  • Financial Year End: 31 March

What You’ll Do

Core Finance Management

  • Oversee and review day-to-day bookkeeping carried out by the Administrator, resolving queries and ensuring accuracy.
  • Complete month-end processes including payroll journals, bank reconciliations and restricted funds analysis.
  • Maintain well-structured, up-to-date accounting records on QuickBooks Online (QBO).
  • Ensure robust financial controls are in place, fit for purpose, and adhered to, making improvement recommendations where needed.

Payroll & Pensions

  • Process monthly payroll for a small staff team using accredited payroll software.
  • Produce payslips, staff reports and pension submissions, including auto-enrolment filings with The People’s Pension.

Reporting & Budgeting

  • Prepare clear, timely monthly management accounts against budget for staff, Trustees and key stakeholders.
  • Support staff and the Treasurer with forecasting and full-year projections.
  • Ensure budget vs actual reports are readily available and easy for non-finance staff to understand.
  • Closely monitor restricted funds and flag risks or pressures early.
  • Lead on the development of the annual organisational budget, incorporating strategic considerations around income from earned and funded programmes, including grants and commissioned activity.
  • Manage in-year financial planning and monitoring of budget ensuring accurate forecasting, reporting and cashflow management throughout the year.

Funders, Trustees & Compliance

  • Prepare financial reports for funders in collaboration with the staff team.
  • Produce additional financial analysis and reports as required by Trustees or the CEO (re latter for funding applications).
  • Prepare annual accounts for independent examination, liaising with the examiner and keeping leadership informed.
  • Work with the staff and Treasurer to develop the annual organisational budget.

What You’ll Bring

Essential

  • A professional accountancy qualification (ACCA, CIMA, ACA or similar), or equivalent demonstrable experience.
  • Proven experience in a finance management role within a charity or not-for-profit organisation.
  • Experience developing and managing budgets that include a mix of earned income, grant funding, fund accounting and commission-based activity.
  • Strong working knowledge of accounting software (QuickBooks Online preferred).
  • Experience running payroll and managing pensions.
  • Ability to interpret performance-based or commission-style agreements and ensure accurate calculation, accrual and reporting of related income and payments.
  • Excellent Excel skills for budgeting, forecasting and reporting.
  • High attention to detail with a clear, methodical approach.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to explain financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues.
